In the second quarter of Consecration, our focus is “Excel, Latitude, Empowerment ”. One way to feel empowered, is by taking charge of your health or maybe even addressing concerns that have previously swept under the rug. We must take care of the temples that God has put us in charge of, one being our bodies!

Thyroid Awareness Month is observed every year in January. It is a time to raise awareness about thyroid health, common thyroid disorders, and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck that produces hormones that regulate many bodily functions, including metabolism, energy levels, and mood.

Several conditions can affect the thyroid gland. Here are some of the most common:

  • Hypothyroidism: This occurs when the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone. Symptoms can include fatigue, weight gain, constipation, and depression.

  • Hyperthyroidism: This occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. Symptoms can include weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and irritability.

  • Goiter: This is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, which can occur with both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

  • Thyroid Nodules: These are lumps that can develop in the thyroid gland. Most thyroid nodules are benign, but some can be cancerous.

  • Thyroid Cancer: This is a relatively rare type of cancer that can often be treated successfully, especially when detected early.

  • Fatigue

  • Weight changes (gain or loss)

  • Changes in heart rate

  • Dry skin and hair

  • Feeling cold or hot

  • Constipation or more frequent bowel

  • movements

  • Muscle weakness

  • Mood changes (depression or anxiety)

  • Irritability

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Menstrual irregularities

  • Swelling in the neck

  • Hoarseness

  • Sleep disturbances

If you're experiencing any of the symptoms associated with a thyroid disorder, it's important to get tested. A simple blood test can determine if your thyroid is functioning properly. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent more serious health problems.

During Thyroid Awareness Month, consider scheduling a check-up with your healthcare provider, educating yourself about thyroid health, and sharing information with friends and family. Together, we can raise awareness and promote better thyroid health for all.
